A variable neighborhood search based matheuristic for nurse rostering problems
نویسندگان
چکیده
A practical nurse rostering problem, which arises at a ward of an Italian private hospital, is considered. In this problem, it is required each month to generate the nursing staff shifts subject to various requirements. A matheuristic approach is introduced, based on a set of neighborhoods searched by a commercial integer programming solver within a defined global time limit. Generally speaking, a matheuristic algorithm is a heuristic algorithm that uses non trivial optimization and mathematical programming tools to explore the solutions space with the aim of analyzing large scale neighborhoods. The solutions computed by the proposed procedure are compared to the solutions achieved by the pure solver within the same time limit. The results show that the proposed solution approach outperforms the solver in terms of solution quality.

A Decomposition, Construction and Post- Processing Approach for Nurse Rostering
This paper presents our work on decomposing a specific nurse rostering problem by cyclically assigning blocks of shifts, which are designed considering both hard and soft constraints, to groups of nurses. The rest of the shifts are then assigned to the nurses to construct a schedule based on the one cyclically generated by blocks. The schedules obtained by decomposition and construction can be ...
متن کاملA Hybrid Constraint Programming Approach for Nurse Rostering Problems
Due to the complexity of nurse rostering problems (NRPs), Constraint Programming (CP) approaches on their own have shown to be ineffective in solving these highly constrained problems. We investigate a two-stage hybrid CP approach on real world benchmark NRPs. In the first stage, a constraint satisfaction model is used to generate weekly rosters consist of high quality shift sequences satisfyin...
متن کاملSolving the Nurse Rostering Problem Knowledge Representation and Reasoning Seminar
Nurse rostering is a complex problem which affects the everyday activities and health care tasks in modern hospitals. The Nurse Rostering Problem is a subclass of the personnel scheduling problems, and most of its instances are NP-hard. The goal is to find a quality assignment of shift categories to available nurses. Even though solving the Nurse Rostering Problem has been a field of interest o...
متن کاملA Hybrid Approach for Solving Real-World Nurse Rostering Problems
Nurse rostering is the process of creating a plan for nurse working hours over a given time horizon. This problem, most variants of which are NP-hard, has been studied extensively for many years. Still, practical nurse rostering is mostly done manually, often by highly qualified health care personnel. This underlines the need to address the challenges of realistic, applied nurse rostering, and ...
متن کاملA hybrid heuristic ordering and variable neighbourhood search for the nurse rostering problem
This paper is concerned with the development of intelligent decision support methodologies for nurse rostering problems in large modern hospital environments. We present an approach which hybridises heuristic ordering with variable neighbourhood search. We show that the search can be extended and the solution quality can be significantly improved by the careful combination and repeated use of h...
